There is no more quintessentially Japanese experience than soaking in an onsen — a natural hot spring fed by the country's volcanic heart. Whether it is an outdoor bath under falling snow or a riverside pool deep in the mountains, an onsen is where Japan truly unwinds. Here is how to enjoy one, and where to find the best.
An onsen is a bath fed by naturally heated, mineral-rich water from Japan's many volcanoes. It is quite distinct from a sento (a public bath heated artificially). For centuries the Japanese have treasured onsen for their soothing warmth and reputed health benefits.
You will find them everywhere — from grand resort towns to tiny rural inns and free wild baths (notenburo) tucked into the mountains. An open-air onsen is called a rotenburo, and soaking in one surrounded by nature is the real magic.

The rituals matter, and getting them right is part of the pleasure. The essentials:
Traditionally, visible tattoos were not allowed, so if you have them, look for tattoo-friendly onsen or private baths, which are increasingly common.
The finest way to experience an onsen is an overnight stay in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. You will sleep on futons on tatami mats, pad about in a yukata robe, and enjoy a beautifully presented multi-course kaiseki dinner of seasonal dishes.
Many ryokan have their own onsen, and the best offer private baths you can book for yourselves. Waking early for a quiet dawn soak before breakfast is one of travel's great small pleasures.
Japan has thousands of hot-spring towns. A few standouts:
Winter is especially magical, when you can soak in the hot water as snow drifts down.
