Host families provide direct insight into Japanese daily life and foster cultural exchange in a very personal way.
Cherry blossom season, autumn foliage, and the visibility of Mount Fuji vary depending on the weather.

Yes, on some trips. Where available, we offer options to extend your stay or add pre- and post-tour nights. Let us know your preferences and we’ll help arrange additional services where possible.
No. While we sell tours if multiple countries (i.e. Germany, France, United Kingdom, etc), we do not combine guests from those countries into a single departure. However, if, for instance, a German customer were to purchase from one of our UK sites (i.e. www.africaventura.co.uk as opposed to www.africaventura.de), nothing would stop them from doing so but the tour would be conducted in English.
We intentionally keep our groups small to ensure a more personal and immersive experience. The vast majority of our tours have a maximum limit of 12 and on average our tours have around 9 travellers. However a small number of our trips allow up to 16 travellers.
Our tour prices typically include accommodation, most meals, guided activities, entrance fees, and ground transportation. Specific inclusions are listed on each trip page.
We select comfortable, well-located hotels and guesthouses that reflect the local character. Accommodation standards and details are listed on each trip page.

Welcome to Japan!
At Fukuoka Airport, your English-speaking tour guide will meet you. Together, you'll travel to your first hotel. Fukuoka is the ideal starting point for your trip: not too big, not too hectic, yet full of life. Here, you can relax and immerse yourself in the Japanese way of life.
In the evening, you'll enjoy a Japanese welcome dinner before relaxing with a leisurely stroll along the Naka River. Feel the evening breeze and watch the city lights reflect in the water.
If hunger strikes again, a real highlight awaits: the famous food stalls, known as yatai. There, you can sample typical Japanese dishes amidst the vibrant atmosphere – a tradition that is now found almost exclusively in Fukuoka.

Before continuing our journey to Hiroshima, we enjoy breakfast. After a relaxing morning, we board Japan's fastest train, the Shinkansen, just like a true Japanese "salaryman" – and head off to our destination.
As a place steeped in history, Hiroshima has much to offer. At the Peace Memorial with its domed roof, Genbaku Domu, we commemorate the many lives lost here to the atomic bomb "Little Boy." A truly moving moment of remembrance!

Japaventura Plus: To round off the day on Miyajima, our tour guide has a special treat in store for you: "Momiji-Manju", a special pastry of the island.
After a hearty breakfast, you'll set off for Miyajima Island. Today's itinerary includes a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Itsukushima Shrine with its famous "floating" torii gate, which rises majestically from the sea.
Afterwards, the beauty of Mount Misen will captivate you. The ascent through the dense forest promises adventure and a chance to experience nature as you climb to the 535-meter summit. But don't worry, the Miyajima Cable Car makes the climb much easier – especially the first section. The view from the top is simply spectacular: the vastness of the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with small islands on the horizon. The final stretch of the ascent, about 100 meters in altitude, is challenging, but the reward of the panoramic view far outweighs the effort.
When the cable car is crowded, creativity is required. But don't worry, together with the group, you'll explore alternative routes and still enjoy the charm of this magical place.
In the evening, you'll have time to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Japanese pub culture. Your guide will give you tips on where locals gather after work to unwind with hearty food and refreshing drinks. A fantastic opportunity to discover Japan's culinary scene on your own.

You start your day with an early breakfast in the heart of Hiroshima. Full of anticipation, you board the train to Himeji, where the imposing Himeji Castle awaits. Its gleaming white splendor is aptly nicknamed the "White Heron" among Japan's castles, rising majestically from its hilltop perch.
A short walk takes you to the enchanting Koko-en Gardens. Here, you enter a world of nine artfully designed tea gardens, whose Edo-style architecture transports you to a bygone era. As you admire the picturesque ponds and traditional teahouses, you'll find countless stunning photo opportunities to capture lasting memories.
After a relaxing lunch, you take the local bus to the ropeway station. The drive up to Engyō-ji Temple on Mount Shosha is a highlight in itself. Often called the "Temple in the Sky," it allows you to immerse yourself in a profound spiritual atmosphere. The impressive wooden buildings, surrounded by dense cedar forests, offer both a place of tranquility and breathtaking views of Himeji and the Seto Inland Sea.

Japaventura Plus: You have the unique opportunity to participate in the life of a Japanese family. You will eat with your host family and also stay overnight with them.
As the first rays of sunlight illuminate the monastery, you leave your room – it's time for morning prayers. The recitation of the sutras fills the candlelit room, and the spiritual atmosphere invites you to pause and reflect.
Afterward, you go to the refectory, where the resident monks serve you a simple yet nourishing breakfast. Refreshed, you set off for Japan's largest cemetery: Okunoin. Here, beneath centuries-old cedar trees, lie some 200,000 warriors' graves.
Your guide then leads you to the Torodo Lantern Hall, whose flames, according to legend, have burned continuously for over 900 years.
In the afternoon, you leave the beaten path and venture into a region that remains a mystery even to many Japanese. Away from the tourist crowds, you'll meet families who proudly and warmly open their homes to you. Here, you'll immerse yourself in the heart of rural Japanese life and experience firsthand how important the tradition of Omotenashi (Japanese hospitality) remains today.
No favors are expected of you. However, it's always appreciated if you share something about your culture—whether about your region or your country. Please remember to remove your shoes at the entrance. Small gifts from your homeland, such as chocolate or other treats, are especially welcome. It's a thoughtful gesture, but by no means obligatory.
Please note: Guest assignments are made by our local contact and depend on capacity, availability, and any dietary requirements. Therefore, we cannot inform you in advance which family you will be staying with. Should there not be enough places in Wazuka, we will switch to another village in the region – but your stay with a host family is guaranteed in any case.

You'll spend the morning enjoying a leisurely breakfast with your host family.
Afterwards, inspired by the many suggestions from previous travelers, you'll travel to Nara, Japan's ancient capital.
If you're already missing the little deer of Miyajima, you'll find their "cousins" here. Just as curious and playful, they're simply waiting for your attention (and perhaps a little treat).
But of course, you're not here just for the deer. Your real destination is Todaiji, the "Great Temple of the East," founded in the 8th century. A place that impresses with its history and monumental architecture.
Over the past two days, you've experienced a kind of parallel world: the lives of the monks, daily life in a small village—a rare, intimate glimpse into the heart of Japan. This afternoon, you'll continue your journey to an absolute highlight of any trip to Japan: the ancient imperial city of Kyoto awaits you.
For dinner in this city steeped in tradition, you'll discover a new specialty: crispy fried gyoza!

Welcome to Nagano, host city of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Despite its fame, Nagano remains relatively uncrowded, making it the perfect stopover to relax in the fresh air before diving into the hustle and bustle of Japan's capital in a few days.
You rise early to explore the Togakushi-Plateau. You'll quickly feel the mystical aura emanating from this place as you stroll along the Kagami-ike "Mirror Pond" or walk in awe along the path lined with gigantic Japanese cedars to the Togakushi Shrine.
Also of interest is the historical heart of Nagano: the Zenko-ji Buddhist Temple. If you haven't yet encountered Amida Buddha, you'll find yourself very close to one of his hidden Hibutsu statues.
In the evening, you can continue to enjoy the unique ambiance of this jewel of the Japanese Alps with a leisurely stroll.
Note for March/April and November departures: Depending on your travel dates, we will adjust the program for this day according to the weather, as access to the Togakushi Shrine is not always guaranteed in very cold temperatures. The tour guide will make this decision based on the weather conditions. Japaventura has prepared an alternative programme for this day.

The mountain is calling – and we're answering! Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. Especially popular with artists, the sacred mountain "Fujisan" is a favorite source of inspiration and is considered one of Japan's most powerful symbols. The Japanese say that its splendor is best appreciated from a distance. Following this advice, we're heading to Lake Kawaguchiko, one of the five lakes surrounding Mount Fuji. We'll first stop at the beautiful Oishi Park on the lake, which already offers a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape. From the Koyodai Observatory, we'll then have a breathtaking view of the mountain's majesty (weather permitting).
Lake Kawaguchiko, one of the five lakes that surround Mount Fuji. After a long bus ride, we'll relax with a hot bath at the Inamuragasaki Onsen, right on the coast of Kamakura, which offers a direct view of the sea. Alternatively, you can take a walk in the nearby Inamuragasaki Coastal Park, from which Mount Fuji is also visible on a clear day.
Today, we'll send our main luggage ahead to Tokyo so you can travel comfortably with just a light backpack.
For more information about visiting the onsen, please see the section "How should I behave in Japanese communal baths?" under "Frequently Asked Questions." Many onsen do not allow tattoos. If you have any, please contact your travel specialist.

View from the iconic Tokyo tower
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
After ten days in the countryside, in temples, old villages and the mountains of Japan, it is now time for the vibrant metropolis of Tokyo. We'll get an overview of the different districts.
First, we'll head to the famous Yoyogi Park, an oasis of calm in the heart of the metropolis. We'll visit the Meiji Jingu Shrine, dedicated to Japan's first modern emperor, Emperor Meiji.
Next, we'll explore the trendy fashion district of Harajuku and then the vibrant Shibuya district, known for its huge, bustling intersection and countless bars and restaurants. Tokyo's individual city centers, with their tranquil parks, temples, towering skyscrapers, brightly lit billboards, and constant flow of passengers in train stations and streets, perfectly illustrate what makes Tokyo so extraordinary: a vast city of cities where contrasts merge and which never sleeps.
The last destination of the day will be the iconic Tokyo Tower in the Roppongi district, where we can admire Tokyo and, weather permitting, Mount Fuji!

Tokyo has many wonders to offer!
You can spend your last day in Tokyo exactly as you wish. Tokyo offers a virtually endless selection of attractive options! Your tour guide will be happy to make suggestions tailored to your individual preferences.
… Here are a few suggestions:
Optional Excursion Nikko:
If you've booked an excursion, you'll board an express train that will take you to Nikko! Nikko's sublime natural beauty and masterpieces of Japanese architecture will make you forget your early morning departure…
Nestled amidst this breathtaking scenery is the Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. You'll be almost blinded by its magnificent golden facade. The shrine was built in honor of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and its design reflects a remarkable level of creativity. The Toshogu Shrine differs from the more spartan structures primarily in its vibrant colors and extravagant carvings.
The five-story pagoda is perhaps most impressive due to its height. The five stories of Nikko Toshogu represent the elements of existence in ascending order: earth, water, fire, wind, and emptiness.
Before heading back to Tokyo, you'll cross the Shinkyo Bridge, also known as the "Sacred Bridge," recognizable by its dark foundations and red-lacquered wood, which gracefully arches over the Daiya River.
The booking conditions for the optional excursion to Nikko are the same as for the other activities. To book, simply contact us by email or phone.
