If spring has the blossom, autumn has the fire. From October to early December, Japan's maples and ginkgos turn brilliant shades of scarlet, orange and gold, and temple gardens glow at their most photogenic. Cooler, quieter and every bit as beautiful as spring, autumn may be the finest time of all to visit Japan.
Koyo — the turning of the autumn leaves — is followed almost as keenly as the cherry blossom. Just as the blossom sweeps north in spring, the autumn colours sweep south and downhill from around September to early December.
The fiery Japanese maple (momiji) steals the show, but golden ginkgo avenues, russet beech and larch add depth. Many gardens hold evening illuminations, and the reflection of red maples in a temple pond is one of Japan's great sights.

Timing depends on latitude and altitude:
As a rule, the lower and further south you are, the later the leaves turn.
Some of the country's finest autumn spots:
Kyoto in particular is spectacular — book ahead, as it is popular for good reason.
Beyond the colours, autumn offers some of the year's most comfortable weather: warm, clear days and cool, crisp evenings that are perfect for long walks and hikes. September can still bring the odd typhoon and lingering humidity, but by mid-October the skies settle.
Crowds are generally lighter than in spring, harvest food is at its best, and Mount Fuji is often at its clearest. It is a wonderful, slightly gentler season to explore.

Autumn colour timing shifts a little each year, so a flexible itinerary helps you follow the leaves. Kyoto's top temples and popular ryokan book out well in advance during peak koyo, so reserve early.
On our small-group trips we time the route to the colours, handle the trains and reservations, and travel with a guide who knows which gardens are turning first. Browse our Japan trips below and let us build your autumn around the very best of the foliage.
