January is Japan at its crispest and quietest — cold, bright and blissfully uncrowded once the New Year rush settles. It is the season for powder snow, steaming onsen, winter illuminations and clear views of a snow-capped Fuji. Here are the best places to visit in Japan in January.
January is the coldest month, but it is often dry and gloriously sunny, especially on the Pacific side. Tokyo and Kyoto see clear blue skies and chilly, frosty days, while the Sea of Japan side and the north are deep in snow.
This clear winter air brings some of the year's finest views of Mount Fuji. Pack proper layers, gloves and a warm coat, and the cold becomes part of the charm.

January is prime ski season, with the mountains buried in Japan's famous dry powder. Niseko on Hokkaido and Hakuba in Nagano offer world-class runs, welcoming villages and easy access from the cities.
Even non-skiers should head into the snow to meet the snow monkeys of Jigokudani, who lounge in their own steaming hot-spring pool while flakes settle around them — an unforgettable, only-in-Japan sight.

There is no better month to embrace the onsen. Soaking in a steaming outdoor bath while snow drifts down is one of travel's great pleasures, and hot-spring towns such as Kusatsu, Nozawa Onsen and Ginzan Onsen are at their most magical.
Stay in a traditional ryokan, pull on a yukata, and follow your soak with a warming seasonal dinner. It is the perfect antidote to the January cold.
Early January still carries the glow of Oshogatsu, the Japanese New Year. Shrines and temples across the country are busy with hatsumode, the first prayer visit of the year, and you may catch lucky charms, food stalls and a genuinely festive, family atmosphere.
Winter illuminations also light up cities and gardens well into the month, turning parks and boulevards into rivers of light after dark.
