February is deep winter in Japan, and all the better for it. This is the month of the dazzling Sapporo Snow Festival, the first plum blossoms of the year, some of the best skiing of the season and hot-spring soaks under falling snow. Here are the best places to visit in Japan in February.
February remains cold across the country, with heavy snow in the north and the mountains and crisp, dry days in the cities. It can be the snowiest month of all in Hokkaido and along the Sea of Japan coast.
Despite the chill, the light is beautiful and the winter scenery is at its peak. Wrap up warm and make the most of the reliable powder and the steaming onsen.

February's headline event is the spectacular Sapporo Snow Festival, held in early February on Hokkaido. Enormous, intricately carved snow and ice sculptures fill the city's parks and streets, lit up dramatically after dark.
It is one of Japan's most famous winter celebrations and well worth building a trip around, combined with Hokkaido's superb seafood, skiing and snowscapes.

Long before the cherry trees bloom, February brings the delicate plum blossom (ume). Plum groves such as those at Kairakuen in Mito — one of Japan's great gardens — burst into fragrant pink and white, drawing crowds for the earliest hint of spring.
Plum blossom is quieter and more subtle than the sakura frenzy, and a lovely, uncrowded reason to be in Japan this month.

February is still firmly ski season, with excellent conditions in Niseko, Hakuba and Nozawa. It is also the ideal month for the snow monkeys of Jigokudani and for onsen towns wrapped in snow.
For something otherworldly, the Shirakawa-go village of steep thatched farmhouses looks straight out of a fairy tale under a blanket of snow, occasionally lit up on special winter evenings.
