August is high summer and Japan's most festive month. It is hot and humid, but it more than makes up for it with dazzling firework displays, the ancestral Obon celebrations, spectacular regional festivals and the last chance to climb Mount Fuji. Here are the best places to visit in Japan in August.
August is the hottest, most humid month, with city temperatures often in the mid-thirties. It is also the peak of typhoon season, so keep an eye on the forecast.
The heat is best met with an early start, plenty of water and a plan to escape to cooler places — the highlands, the northern coast or Hokkaido — during the middle of the day. Evenings, when the festivals come alive, are the reward.

August is festival season at its most spectacular. The north hosts some of the very best:
These are unforgettable, and well worth planning a trip around.
Mid-August brings Obon, when families honour their ancestors and many return to their home towns. You may see beautiful bon odori dances and floating-lantern ceremonies on rivers and coasts.
August is also the peak of hanabi (fireworks) season, with major displays lighting up the skies over Tokyo, Osaka and countless towns — a magical way to spend a warm summer evening.

To beat the humidity, follow the locals to cooler climes. Hokkaido stays pleasant and green, the Japanese Alps and Kamikochi offer superb high-altitude hiking, and hill stations like Karuizawa provide a breezy retreat.
August is also the final stretch of the Mount Fuji climbing season (which usually closes in early September), though it is the busiest time on the mountain.
