Uwajima is a city near the sea, in the hollow of Bungo Strait which separates Kyushu and Shikoku islands. Few travelers visit Uwajima during their stay in Japan, yet the city has a lot to offer!
The city is part of the famous pilgrimage route of the 88 temples around Shikoku Island. It is also the ideal place to immerse yourself in one of the aspects of Japanese culture that seems, to us Europeans, strange. There are several delicate temples as well as other oddities such as a sex museum that is part of a larger fertility shrine.
Uwajima, like the city of Matsuyama, has a castle from the feudal period which is one of the twelve original castles still intact in Japan.
