Taga Shrine is a Shinto site where people pray for longevity, good health and especially fertility. The Taga Shrine is famous would be one of those aspects of Japanese culture that seems, to us Europeans, strange.
The shrine is famous for its cult objects related to fertility, including a wooden phallus about two meters long displayed next to the main shrine building. These explicit fertility objects were once more common in Japanese shrines, until Western puritanical values led to their suppression around the Meiji period (1868-1912).
There are several other sights in the area, such as the Sex Museum, which displays woodcuts and other erotic illustrations from different parts of the world and offers a more detailed look at the history of the Japanese relationship to sexuality and fertility.
Minors under the age of 20 are not allowed entry.
