Your hike begins at the Zao Okama Crater Katta Restaurant at an altitude of around 1,758 m, which we reach by private coach. From there, the path leads over the summit of Mt. Kumano (1,841 m) and on to Mt. Jizo, until you finally reach the Jizo-Sanchou Station of the Zao Ropeway. The entire route is approximately 5.4 km long, with an elevation difference of about 384 m. The average walking time is around 2.5–3 hours.
The trail runs along the crater rim of Lake Okama and, in good weather, offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The route is well marked, though a few rocky sections, some inclines and damp ground can pose challenges. Sturdy footwear and warm, weatherproof clothing are therefore recommended. After the hike, we take the Zao Ropeway comfortably down into the valley and spend a little more time in the small village right by Zao Onsen, before setting off by private coach towards the west coast on an approximately 2.5-hour journey to our hotel in Tsuruoka. Please note: If you would rather not take part in the hike, you can come along as far as the Zao volcanic crater and then travel straight down to Zao Onsen by coach to wait there for the group.

Volcanic origin: Mt. Zao (蔵王山, Zao-san) is an active volcano and part of the Zao mountain range, which stretches across the prefectures of Miyagi and Yamagata. The volcano is famous for its spectacular crater lake, called Okama, which has a vivid green colour.
“Okama” – The mystical crater lake:
The Okama crater lake on Mt. Zao has a striking green colour, caused by minerals in the water. The lake is shaped like a “bowl” and is often referred to as the “Bowl of God”. The name “Okama” literally means “cauldron” or “bowl” and describes the shape of the crater.
Ski resort in winter: Mt. Zao is a popular ski resort that draws countless visitors in both winter and summer. It is renowned for its excellent snow conditions and is often compared with other major Japanese ski resorts such as Niseko. The area offers around 14 pistes and breathtaking views.
Zao Onsen: At the foot of Mt. Zao lies Zao Onsen, a traditional hot spring area. It is one of the oldest onsen areas in Japan and offers a wide variety of thermal baths, ideal for relaxing after a day on the slopes.
A destination for hikers: In summer, Mt. Zao is a popular destination for hikers who wish to enjoy the picturesque landscapes and the rich flora and fauna. There are numerous trails suitable for both beginners and experienced mountaineers. From the summit, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surroundings.
Zao “Juhyo” (snow monsters): In winter, the mountain transforms into a surreal winter wonderland, famous for its “Juhyo”, or “snow monsters”. These enormous trees, covered in snow and ice, create a mystical atmosphere and are a unique natural phenomenon that attracts many photographers and visitors.
Significance in Japanese mythology: In Japanese mythology, Mt. Zao is associated with the deity Zao Gongen, an important guardian god of the mountain. The Zao Jingu shrine, located near the mountain, is a sacred place where visitors pray for protection and blessings.
Famous views: Mt. Zao offers some of the most beautiful panoramas in Japan. In good weather, from its summit you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and the neighbouring Lake Okama. This makes it a popular destination for nature photographers and hikers.
Volcanic activity: Although Mt. Zao is an active volcano, it has shown only minor activity in recent years. Even so, it remains a fascinating geological destination and an important part of the region.
